About
Finland, your Congress City, and the Congress Venue
Finland is
situated in northern Europe; Sweden to the west, the tip of Norway in
the north, a long border with Russia to the east, and Estonia to the south,
across the Gulf of Finland. Finland is a safe and reliable destination,
easily accessible from all over the world (www.finland-tourism.com).
In terms
of land area, Finland is the seventh largest country in Europe and, with
a population of only five million, the sense of space is truly amazing.
Finland surprises you with contrasts: ca. 70 % of the area is covered
with forests, 10 % with water – there are 188 000 lakes at the last
count – and only about 8 % is cultivated area. With its location
at the Arctic Circle, Finland offers ’White Nights’ in summer.
In the northern parts of the country, the sun does not set for several
weeks in the summer (www.foreca.com).
Jyväskylä
- Your Host City
The
ISBE2004 venue Jyväskylä (www.jyvaskyla.fi)
is located 270 km north of the capital Helsinki within good flight, rail
and road connections of all parts of the country. It is the main city
of the Finnish Lake district, a lively university town with about 140
000 inhabitants in Jyväskylä region. Jyväskylä is
often accurately described as ”The big little city”, it has
the advantages of a small town without the drawbacks of a big city. Comfort
and safety characterise the city, as well as short travelling distances.
A map of Jyväskylä can be found here.
The
Congress Venue
The
congress will be held at Jyväskylä Paviljonki, the International
Congress and Trade Fair Centre (http://www.paviljonki-jkl.com/english/index.htm).
The congress centre lies by beautiful Lake Päijänne within just
a short walking distance of the city centre and a range of comfortable
hotels. All activities – plenary and parallel sessions, exhibitions,
catering services, etc. – will be scheduled in the same facility
allowing easy access to all daily functions plus granting plenty of opportunities
for socialising.
